A purpose-built organic feed mill in Austria
Gsellmann Mischfuttererzeugung GmbH invested in a purpose-built organic feed mill in Austria with a production capacity of 30 tonnes per hour. Rather than adapting an existing installation, Gsellmann chose to build a dedicated plant designed specifically for organic compound feed production. Ottevanger delivered the feed mill as main contractor.
The project built on a partnership between Gsellmann and Ottevanger spanning more than 20 years. Ottevanger had previously supplied machinery and specialised processing solutions for Gsellmann’s conventional compound feed production. The new organic feed mill represented the next step in this long-term collaboration.
The plant was designed primarily to serve regional organic farms. Around 70% of its production capacity was intended for laying hen feed, with part of the remaining capacity dedicated to cattle feed. Producing organic compound feed requires strict separation of organic and conventional raw materials. The plant therefore incorporates dedicated processing solutions designed to minimise the risk of cross-contamination and maintain high hygiene standards throughout production.
Gsellmann processes certified organic grains grown without the use of conventional pesticides. These raw materials require careful handling and thorough pre-cleaning before entering the production process. Particular attention was therefore given to raw material cleaning and hygienic processing.
For poultry feed production, the process also incorporates thermal treatment to reduce microbiological risks such as Salmonella. Ottevanger’s experience in feed processing, thermal treatment and dosing technology was incorporated into the overall plant design.
Ottevanger supplied the process equipment and coordinated the construction of the feed mill as main contractor. The project included solutions for processing, thermal treatment, steam and liquid dosing and expansion. TSC supplied the silos for raw material and finished feed storage. Together, the different systems formed an integrated 30 t/h production plant designed specifically for organic compound feed.
