From grain to feed

Counterflow Dryer

Ottevanger Counterflow Dryers gently and evenly dry extruded products using heated air drawn through controlled product beds. Gravity flow reduces wear and complexity, while the counterflow principle ensures efficient heat transfer and accurate moisture control. Optional energy recovery and electric air heating support lower energy use and emissions.

  • Counterflow drying with gravity product flow
  • Consistent moisture results across the bed
  • Easy access for cleaning and inspection

Performance & Applications

Overview

Key benefits

Discover the key benefits of the Counterflow Dryers, designed for efficient and controllable removal of moisture from extruded feed and food products.

  • Counterflow heat exchange for low energy use and uniform drying, with automatic control of air volume, temperature and residence time
  • Gravity flow through one, two or three adjustable beds to protect product structure and minimise breakage
  • Double-walled, insulated stainless-steel construction for hygiene and thermal stability
  • High uptime with most preventive maintenance accessible from outside the machine
  • Optional energy-recovery and electric heat-pump solutions to lower energy use and CO₂ emissions (assumed option; confirm availability in project scope)

Available executions

All machines can be customised. Counterflow Dryers can be delivered in stainless steel with deck and air-system configurations to suit product and capacity.

  • One, two or three drying decks with adjustable bed depth
  • Stainless-steel, double-walled panels with insulated jacket
  • Automatic moisture control and recipe management (assumed common option)
  • Electrified air-heating and energy-recovery packages for reduced energy use (assumed option)
  • Access doors and clean-in-place friendly design for fast inspection and sanitation

FAQ

Hot air is drawn upward through variable-depth product beds while dried product is discharged in small increments. This counterflow of air and product ensures efficient heat transfer and uniform moisture.

Extruded pet food and aqua feed are typical, but other cereals or expanded products can also be dried with the correct deck and air-system configuration.

Yes. Energy-recovery units and electric heat-pump packages can cut energy consumption significantly versus gas/steam systems, supporting decarbonisation goals. (Option availability to be confirmed per project.)

The design uses gravity flow (no internal conveyors), double-walled insulated stainless steel, and outside-accessible maintenance points to simplify cleaning and reduce downtime.
