A purpose-built organic feed mill in Austria
While demand for organic compound feed continues to grow, many producers adapt existing installations to meet organic standards. Gsellmann Mischfuttererzeugung GmbH chose a different path and decided to build a fully new organic feed factory from scratch. The result is a unique installation within Europe. Construction of the plant, led by Ottevanger Milling Engineers, started in August 2021.
Gsellmann and Ottevanger share a long-standing partnership as family-owned businesses, working together for more than 20 years. Ottevanger has supplied Gsellmann with a wide range of machinery for conventional compound feed production, including specialised solutions such as a complete flour sterilisation and heating line with a capacity of 15 tonnes per hour for poultry feed. The new organic feed factory, with a capacity of 30 tonnes per hour, represents a logical next step in this collaboration.
The plant is primarily designed to serve the regional market, where many smaller and specialised organic farms are located. After commissioning, approximately 70% of the production output will consist of feed for laying hens. A smaller share will be dedicated to cattle feed, indirectly supporting the production of organic milk and related dairy products.
Organic compound feed production requires strict separation between organic and conventional raw materials. Gsellmann processes certified organic grains that are grown without the use of pesticides. To prevent cross-contamination, the factory has been designed with dedicated lines and a strong focus on hygiene.
Organic grains are more susceptible to contaminants such as mycotoxins, making thorough pre-cleaning essential before entering the production line. In addition, the flour is heated and sterilised during processing. This is particularly critical for poultry feed, where the prevention of Salmonella and the reduction of acid usage are key priorities. Ottevanger’s experience and expertise in hygienic feed processing played an important role in addressing these challenges.
