Recently, Kenyan Cabinet Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Mr. Willy K. Bett and Dutch Ambassador Mr. Frans Makken officially opened the new Aqua feed factory of Unga Holdings Ltd in Nairobi, Kenya.

The new feed plant is designed to produce 5.000 tons per year of high quality floating fish feed for the East African Market.

It is the first establishment of this size in East Africa, that will responds to the high demand for fish feed. With the new plant, Unga Farms Ltd. creates the opportunity for local fish farmers to increase their output and lower their productions costs per kg.

For the design of the plant, Unga Holdings Ltd. cooperated intensively with the Dutch companies Ottevanger Milling Engineers, Almex – Extrusion Techniques, Pelleting Technologies Netherlands, Inteqnion, Nutreco/Skretting, Wageningen University and Larive International. The companies work together in the Dutch Public-Private Partnership program, FoodTechAfrica(FTA).

Together they created and put in place an approach towards creating a sustainable aquaculture sector in East Africa, starting with the basics Feed, Fingerlings, Sustainable production system and processing.

Ottevanger Milling Engineers was responsible for the engineering, project management, manufacturing and installation of the complete process equipment. The complete Aquafeed process line is designed in an former compound feed plant. The use of an existing construction saves investment cost.
